For the majority of EV owners, over 80% of charging happens at home. The goal for most is "Sleep-and-Charge"—plugging the car in when they arrive home and waking up to a "full tank." But is this possible for every car?
If you rely on Level 1 (a standard wall outlet), a full charge for a long-range EV could take over 40 hours, which isn't practical for daily drivers. However, upgrading to a Level 2 home charging station changes everything. By installing a 240V circuit—similar to what an electric dryer uses—you can deliver between 7kW and 11kW of power. At these rates, even an EV with a large battery can be replenished from empty to full in about 6 to 9 hours. Since most people rarely arrive home with 0% battery, a typical nightly "top-off" from 30% to 80% might only take 3 or 4 hours. This makes home charging incredibly convenient; it takes only seconds to plug in, and you never have to visit a gas station again. Investing in a Level 2 home charger is widely considered the best way to eliminate "range anxiety" and make EV ownership feel effortless.
