The basic setup in a microbrewery begins with milling equipment, where malted barley is crushed to expose starches that will later convert to sugars. The resulting mixture, called "wort," is then transferred to a lauter tun for separation from spent grains.

This is achieved using wort chillers, which bring the temperature down to levels suitable for fermentation. The cooled wort is then moved to fermentation tanks, where yeast is introduced. Fermentation tanks are often stainless steel vessels with temperature control systems to ensure yeast performs optimally.

After fermentation, the beer is either conditioned in the same tank or transferred to bright beer tanks for carbonation and clarity. Depending on packaging methods, kegging, bottling, or canning lines come into play to prepare the product for distribution and consumption.

Sanitation is a critical aspect of brewing, and clean-in-place (CIP) systems are used to clean tanks and piping thoroughly between batches. Modern microbreweries often employ automated control systems for better precision and repeatability in their recipes.
